Hobbies :: Travel & Surfing
My favorite travel and surf spot in Indonesia is a long right-hand point break that rolls through a sand bottom bay for up to 400 meters in front of a palm-lined black sand beach. |

Japan
I moved to Japan to work at a university in Niigata, and later a technology consulting firm in Tokyo. To this day, Japan holds many of the memories closest to my heart.

Photos from many years in Indonesia; from the surf breaks of Bali and Java, to the exotic islands of Sumba and Flores. Every single day that I'm not in Indonesia I miss it dearly.

The Past 10 or so Years...
I received my Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee, and immediately left the country in search of adventure... First I served as both Visiting Professor of Business and Lead Architect for online academic systems at the International University of Japan, in the "snow country" region of Niigata, Japan. Then during the dot com era, after interviewing in London, Hamburg, and Singapore, I decided to remain in Japan, where I worked as an information architect and the manager of mobile and wireless data systems for European and Hong Kong based technology consulting firms in Tokyo. We worked a lot on i-mode mobile web applications in fact, I wrote the book on it (in English at least).
Disillusioned with the business world, I took some time off and for more than a year I was in Indonesia, where I volunteered with the Sumba Foundation, working on a project to promote local handicrafts and textiles from the impoverished areas of Sumba Island. Returning from the journey across Indonesia, at the time of the tsunami there, I served as the first Visiting Professor in the field of Instructional Technology at Shaanxi Normal University in Xi'an, China one of the largest teacher preparatory universities in the world.
Just prior to moving to Appalachian State University in the summer of 2008, I was Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of Instructional Technology in the School of Education for several years in Micronesia, at the University of Guam. |
