My Courses

I am a faculty member at Appalachian State University, where I teach graduate courses in instructional technology. Below is a list of the courses I currently teach at Appalachian State, as well as those I taught at the University of Guam from 2005 to 2008. At right are video tutorials I produced that you can use in your classroom.  
 
Video Literacy Project
In a UOG course on Audio Visual production for Education, each semester my students produce short videos as an authentic activity in designing multimedia messages.

Creating Public Service Announcement Campaigns with Vegas Movie Studio Creating Public Service Announcement Campaigns with Vegas Movie Studio
Success in school and life for the current generation of students requires the ability to read, create, and decipher both verbal and visual messages. This project involves creating a public service announcement (PSA) on a social topic of one's choosing. The completed commercial combines still images, music, on-screen text, and narration in a 30 second video.
 
Developing Web 2.0 Geo-Narratives using Google Earth Developing Web 2.0 Geo-Narratives using Google Earth
Google Maps and Google Earth are wonderful tools to incorporate web-based data into any subject area curriculum. This project tasks students in developing Geo-Narratives, place-based writing exercises which provide for different learning styles, incorporate multi-modal learning opportunities, and foster emotionally and intellectually engaging activities.
 

Appalachian State Graduate Courses

ITC 5320 :: Telecommunications Technologies in Education
The exploration of telecommunications in the learning environment, including attributes of learning activities that take advantage of telecommunications facilities, establishing and running learning activities using telecommunications technologies.
ITC 5620 :: Integrating Computer Technology into Instruction
The study of processes that facilitate the incorporation of computer capabilities into the K-12 school curriculum, including the identification of appropriate instructional settings for computer use and the means to support teachers as they introduce the use of computers into the curriculum.
ITC 5630 :: Advanced Web Design for Education
Web design and elements that support the development of interactive web-based learning activities, tools, techniques, and trends in educational web site design, especially those which support student learning and online courses.
ITC 5720 :: Planning for Instructional Technology in Schools
The development of technology plans for existing and future schools that incorporate current levels of technology and allow for the growth into new technologies, including the evaluation of hardware and software and the development of networking systems.

University of Guam Undergraduate

ED451 :: Audio Video Learning
Psychological and theoretical basis for using instructional media and technology in education, and production of various instructional media utilizing telecommunications, assistive technology, computers, and multimedia tools.
ED452 :: Computers in Education
provides practical experience with educational technology, to aid students in integrating various types of hardware and software into school and classroom use. Issues involved in computer use in education are studied.

University of Guam Graduate Courses

ED630 :: Instructional Design Seminar
Problems in systematically applying educational media technology to instruction and learning. Includes selecting appropriate modes of instruction based on clearly defined objectives, organization of instructional configurations, and media implementation.
ED631 :: Instructional Applications of Hypermedia
This course is designed to develop skills needed to author interactive instructional hypermedia software and online web applications for educational use. It will apply basic instructional design principles in the production of hypermedia programs.
ED632 :: Computer Graphics & Desktop Publishing
Application of communication theory and learning principles to design of graphic instructional materials to improve individual and group learning. Includes design, production, evaluation, and preparation of necessary utilization and study materials and guides.
ED635 :: Educational Photo & Video Production
Develop skills in digital photography for the classroom, as well as designing and producing, educational, informational and/or motivational video programs.
ED638 :: Teaching with the Internet
This course focuses on how to use the Internet for teaching and learning. It helps students develop skills and strategies in integrating the Internet as an essential resource into the curriculum. Course Management Systems, open source initiatives, and Web 2.0 applications for educational use will be reviewed.
ED691 :: Research Overview Seminar
Students review major issues in their field from different theoretical and methodological perspectives and develop their own research and/or professional exploration projects.
ED894 :: Designing Place-Based Games for Groundwater Education
In this project-based course, science teachers are introduced to the development of field-based games for engaging students in fundamental issues related to groundwater on the island of Guam.
